Original Item: Only One available. This is agreat example of the classic Springfield trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:

Offered invery good condition is this trapdoor rifle in .45-70 government caliber,fitted with the correct Buffington rear sight. It also comes with its original Saddle Ring and Bar on the left hand side of the wood stock.
The serial 415081 indicates production in 1888,and there is a faded Inspector’s Cartouche on the left side, of the stock, though it is not legible. The stock is ingood original condition,with the expected wear from age and service. It is somewhat proud over the lock plate, so the stock has not been sanded down much. It does have chipping around the hammer and saddle bar, and some heavy wear around the butt plate. This is definitely a rifle that saw extensive service.The bore is infair condition,showing lands and grooves, however there is also fouling and significant wear, along with some oxidation.
This carbine is also fitted with the butt stock storage compartment, where a multi-piece cleaning rod and tools would be stored. Unfortunately these are long gone, and it is empty. Also the door is currently very difficult to open.
The butt plate is marked U.S. though the front band/guard is U marked. Metal finish is quite good, with the original blue fading to plum, and some rust speckling.Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, saddle-ring on sliding bar, and carbineBuffington sight. Lock is marked with an eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts.
Additional marks of interest include inspectors’ and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel, which are somewhat faded: a V over a P over an eagle’s head over another P on the left side just above the stock. There is also an Astamped on top of the chamber.The upper right corner of the Buffington sight leaf is markedCto indicate that the sight graduations are for acarbine and not a rifle.
This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very nice example of a legendary U.S. issue firearm. Ready to display!
